Following their impressive victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LIX, the Philadelphia Eagles have officially accepted an invitation to the White House to celebrate their achievement with President Donald Trump.

Eagles Head to the Capital: A Historic Event
During a press briefing on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the Eagles will be in Washington, D.C., on April 28 to commemorate their second Super Bowl title in franchise history.
“We sent an invitation, and they enthusiastically accepted. You will see them here on April 28,” Leavitt stated.
This marks the first time since 2018 that the Eagles have accepted a White House invitation after previously having their invitation revoked under Trump. The decision signals a shift in the team’s approach toward its relationship with the White House.
A Tumultuous Past Between the Eagles and Trump
Back in 2018, after winning Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, the Eagles’ White House invitation was rescinded due to controversy over players kneeling during the national anthem. The Trump administration declared that the team could not guarantee “that all players will stand with their hand on their heart for the national anthem.”
This controversy stemmed from protests led by Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players starting in 2016, aimed at addressing police violence and social inequality.
At the time, Trump took to social media to criticize the Eagles:
“They are in dispute with their President because I insist that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”
However, in 2025, there has been little resistance from the sports world to Trump’s second term. His presence at Super Bowl 2025 was welcomed by several players, including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
Key Eagles Players Weigh In on White House Visit
Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson expressed his willingness to visit the White House:
“I’d be honored to go, regardless of who the president is, but we’ll see. It’s ultimately a team decision. I’ll do what’s best for the team.”
Meanwhile, head coach Nick Sirianni remained cautious when asked about the visit after the team’s victory:
“We’ll see as we go.”
Eagles Become the Second Sports Team to Visit Trump in His Second Term
By accepting the White House invitation, the Philadelphia Eagles become the second professional sports team to visit Trump in his second term, following the Florida Panthers, who celebrated their 2024 Stanley Cup victory at the White House last month.

Taylor Swift Drama and a Surprise Trade
Beyond the Super Bowl victory, the Eagles also found themselves in the spotlight due to an unexpected post-game trade involving safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Some Taylor Swift fans speculated that the trade was linked to comments Gardner-Johnson made about Swift and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
After the Eagles’ Super Bowl win, Gardner-Johnson took to Instagram to mock Kelce and even wore a controversial sweater during the Eagles’ victory parade, featuring a message directed at Swift’s fanbase. On March 11, Gardner-Johnson was unexpectedly traded to the Houston Texans despite having two years remaining on his $27 million contract.
One Swift fan commented on social media:
“The Eagles probably traded CJ Gardner-Johnson partly because of the Taylor Swift thing. Let’s not lie here.”
Another added:
“Didn’t know who CJGJ was until he acted out after the Super Bowl win, and now he’s being traded to Houston. Karma is Tay’s boyfriend.”
The Philadelphia Eagles’ upcoming visit to the White House is not only a momentous occasion for the franchise but also a new chapter in the ongoing relationship between sports and politics. After years of controversy, this decision could signal a shift toward a more traditional celebration of championship victories without as much political tension.
